Each piece of electrical equipment used in a library has an accompanying printed manual which details specific safety issues related to that equipment. Read these instructions and become familiar with them before using the equipment.
Always inspect power cords and electrical fittings for damage before use; discard if worn or damaged
If a power cord feels uncomfortable warm, have it checked by an electrician
Have damaged equipment replaced by a qualified person (an electrician)
Disconnect the power supply before moving or making adjustments to electrical equipment
Use extension cords on a short term basis, if at all
Recycle toner cartridges
Tie or bunch up power cards
Disconnect by pulling on a power cord; grip the plug and pull firmly on it.
Use extension cords as a permanent wiring
Allow carts or book trucks to pass over unprotected power cords
Block ventilation ports on machines which prevent heat build-up
Install electrical equipment in damp, dusy, sunny or hot areas or in areas subject to vibration or where any gas or flammable material is present
Disassemble or modify electrical equipment
Ensure that foreign objects (jewellery , pens, paper clips) don not come into contact with machinery
Keep water and other liquids and wet hands away from electrical equipment
If anything is spilled into electrical equipment immediately turn off the power switch and unplug the machine before calling a qualified service representative
Situate electrical machinery with sufficient space for access to outlets, plugs and ventilation
If a machine makes strange noises, emits smoke, smells or heats immediately turn off the power switch and unplug the machine
Ensure that your hands and clothing are free from contact with the moveable parts of any electrical equipment before activating it
Follow manufacturers instructions for maintenance and regular inspection
Unplug paper shredder before trying to clear paper jams
