Safe Handling of Office Equipment

Equipment & Furniture

DO

  • Use fingertip guards when handling paper

  • Store pencils, pens, scissors and letter openers sharp-point down in a container or flat in  a drawer
  • Carry pencils, scissors and other sharp objects with the tips pointing down.

  • Sheath scissors. letter openers, razor blades and other sharp tools before storing

  • Use a staple remover to remove staples

  • Watch for slipping hazards and pick up paper, rubber bands, pencils erc off the floor

Doors & Drawers

DO

  • Keep hallway doors either fully open or fully closed

  • Use the handle when closing doors and drawers

  • Close drawers and doors immediately after use

Filing Cabinets

DO

  • Put heavy files in the bottom drawers of file cabinets
  • Load filing cabinet from the bottom up. If you are concerned about bending, fill bottom drawer with less used files or heavy objects
  • Open one file cabinet drawer desk drawer at a time 
  • Use the handle when closing drawers and ensure that drawers close completely
  • Avoid overfilling filing cabinets to prevent paper cuts

DON"T

  • Stand on furniture to reach high places. Use a ladder
  • Kick objects out of your pathway; pick them up or push then out of the way
  • Block your view by carrying large or bulky items; use a dolly or hand truck or get assistance from a fellow employee
  • Tilt the chair you are sitting in on its back legs
