Inspect it!

Check that:

  • the ladder is free from broken or loose rungs or other components
  • the ladder has non-slip feet
  • the ladder should be clean and free from oil, grease, dirt, etc.

WARNING: Do not use a broken ladder, or attempt to make repairs yourself. If you notice a defect, put a 'DO NOT USE" sign on the ladder and report to your supervisor. 

Set Up

Ensure that: 

  • the ladder is fully opened and situated on a firm, flat surface
  • ensure that spreaders and locking devices are in place
  • if it being used in an area where it may be endangered by traffic, it is required that a second person hold the ladder steady. Have a person guard the ladder if you think traffic may increase.

Using

Be sure to:

  • Face the ladder when climbing
  • Not go more that two steps from the top
  • Maintain a three-point contact by keeping both hands and one foot or both feet and one hand on the ladder at all times when climbing up or down.
  • Not wear high heels when climbing
  • Not overextend your reach. Do not lean sideways off the ladder, get off the ladder and relocate it.
  • Have only one person on the ladder at a time, and do not allow people to walk under the ladder
  • Get of the ladder to move it, do no attempt to 'walk" the ladder with a rocking motion
